What are the Expressive Arts?

The realm of creativity belongs to everyone! As human beings we have a deep need to express ourselves. It can be challenging to tap into our inner essence, articulate our feelings and gain a deeper understanding of our life experiences.

 

Expressing ourselves visually or through gestures or words provides us with insight into our inner stuff. Creative expression gently allows what’s there to venture outside of us so that we can actually engage it with our senses - see it, hear it, touch it. It provides a way for us to creatively engage what is on the inside of us. It can be immensely profound, powerful and healing because it allows us to integrate diverse aspects of our knowing and being in fluid and loving ways.

In the workshops I offer we are not concerned with painting a masterpiece. We are trying to touch in with ourselves. It can be the simplest act of smudging some paint on paper with our finger and seeing how that makes us feel or what surfaces from within us. We set our inner critic and judgment aside to allow ourselves an authentic opportunity for deeper insight and clarity.

Expressive arts workshops guide you on an inner and outer journey of exploration and discovery. They are contemplative in nature, allowing you to spend mindful moments both with yourself and the group. Workshops allow participants to play with a variety of art materials and experience different means of creative expression including visual art, movement, sound/music, and/or writing.
 
Moving through various forms of expression can bring a sense of interrelatedness as a creative thread emerges and weaves through your personal experience. This creative cycle may address any or all of the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual aspects of well-being. My workshops often converge around themes of the nature of being human and/or being a human in nature.
